Re-entry Permit

What is it?

A re-entry permit will allow you to reenter Japan without a new visa, if you travel abroad and return to Japan during your period of stay. If you leave Japan during your JET contract, you must first obtain a re-entry permit from the Immigration Bureau.

How much does it cost?

The cost for a single re-entry permit is 3000 yen, and a multiple one is 6000 yen. You should buy a money stamp (shunyu inshi) for this amount at the post office before going to the Immigration Bureau.

What do I need?

  • Money stamp (for 3000 or 6000 yen)
  • Your passport
  • Alien registration card
  • Application form (you can fill it out at the Immigration Bureau)

When should I apply?

It is advised that you apply for your re-entry permit at least 2 weeks prior to your planned departure date. They can usually be issued in one day.

How long are they valid?

Multiple re-entry permits are valid for the duration of your period of stay. If you have a reentry permit, you can also stand in the (possibly shorter) "Japanese" line at immigration at the airport!

PROTIPS

The office is not open on holidays. Go on a day your school gives you off in exchange for working on a weekend. Better yet, when you first arrive in Japan, you are apt to have a week or two of down time. Use this time to get your reentry permit. Otherwise, you'll have to take a nenkyu day off.

There's a post office in the basement of the same building. They know exactly what stamp you need there. Just tell them the amount.

Go to the Immigrations Office first, and check out how long the line is. If the wait is long, you can take a number (make sure it's for the correct line) and go to the post office while you wait for your number to be called.

Bring a pen and something to do while you wait.

Travelling Abroad

  • Tell your contracting organization and supervisor your itinerary in case of an emergency.
  • Get entry visa if necessary.
  • Check for any vaccinations you should get before entering your destination country.
  • Making a copy of the photo page, and the status of residence/re-entry permit page of your passport is a good idea, in case you lose it on your trip.
  • Don't forget to fill out your embarkation/disembarkation card!

Visa Extension

When do you apply?

If you decide to stay on JET for a fourth or fifth year, you will need to get your visa extended (as the original period of stay is three years). You should apply up to one month before your visa expires.

You will need the following:

NOTE: If you change your visa, you will need to update your re-entry permit as well to reflect the changes.

Changing Status of Residence

Who needs to apply?

As a JET, your working visa (status of residence) is valid for three years from your arrival in Japan. However, if you change job type (ALT<->CIR), or wish to travel or work in Japan after your visa expires, you must take the necessary procedures to change your status of residence.

You will need the following:

If you renew your passport while in Japan

...you will need to get your visa and re-entry permit transferred to the new passport. You can do this at immigrations. Until you have done it, carry both passports together.

You should also go to your local town office and update your alien registration card.
