Costco

Everybody's favorite ginormous wholesale retailer has an outlet in the Makuhari New City area of Chiba City.

They sell a fair bit of western food, though with a caveat that you usually have to buy in bulk, and Japanese food, toiletries, etc. as well if you want to buy in bulk to try and save money. One of the few places in Japan you can find goldfish snack crackers.

The also sell decent pizza and churros at their snack bar. Apparently their donuts are also somewhat famous (or at least every customer seems to wander out with a pallet full of them).

The catch is that you can't even enter the store without a member's card, which cost 4000 yen to create and last one year. People often go in together on these, however, as a person with a member's card can always bring in 2 guests.

If you don't drive there and can't carry your purchases back on the train, they'll deliver them to your house for a fee (500 yen-ish per box for most of Chiba?).

  • Location: It's about a 20 minute walk from Kaihin Makuhari Station on the JR Keiyo Line. (See website for map.) Basically just walk out to the Makuhari Messe, turn right, and walk to the massive gray and red building out in the middle of the empty lots. Or you can take a bus from the same station.
  • Hours: 10:00am - 8:00pm

If you don't have a card, or you're too lazy to go there

A company called "The flying pig" will do the shopping for you, and mail it to you.
