Buying Foreign Foods in Japan

  • Costco is great, especially if you need cheese and don't want to pay a fortune for it.
  • Jusco and Beisia supermarkets in larger cities and towns carry a lot of foreign food items that are hard to get at smaller, neighborhood supermarkets (ex. SPAM, gnocci, El Paso taco kits, Thai noodles, roast beef, cheddar cheese, cilantro).
  • Yamaya is a wonderful, combination cheap-booze-and-foreign-food chain store with a few locations around Chiba.
  • Carrefour is often cited as a good place for foreign foods because it's French, but it really doesn't have much more variety than you can find at one of the larger Jusco markets.
  • The Foreign Buyers' Club A mail order business based in Kobe, they carry a wide selection and have affordable shipping rates.
  • Kaldi Has a limited amount of foreign goods such as sausage, cheese, taco kits, salsa, and coffee.
  • MEGA Don Quijote In Naruto. It's a massive discount store that also carries import food items not found anywhere else.
